BPL Solar Forms and Information
Where can I find Information on the RESG Program?
(Click on "Small Scale Renewable Generation" at the top of the page)
What is an REIA for Grid Tied Systems?
This is a "Renewable Energy Interconnection Agreement" between the Utility and the Solar Customer to apply for and obtain approval for compliant Grid Tied renewable energy systems. This is not required for Off Grid Solar Systems
How long will the Application, Inspection and Contract period take?
BEC has not issued any indications or guidelines for how long the process will take. Contact BEC to be advised on how long each step will take, and ask what the penalties are for any non compliance by BEC.
What is a Solar Off Grid System?
This is a solar system that includes batteries and can provide clean power from the solar inverters 24/7 to the loads it powers. (A grid tied system can only provide power during daylight hours). The house does not have to be 100% Off Grid...some loads can be on inverted power and some loads can remain on BPL utility power. This is referred to as a "Split circuit system". All sensitive appliance and electronics should be placed on the off grid system to protect them from the utilities "dirty power quality". With an Off Grid Solar system, the utility power or a generator a can be used as additional backup. The utility would be the primary backup and the generator a secondary backup. The generator can be turned off until needed, so it does not run unnecessarily.
What is a Solar Grid Tie System?
This is typically a solar system that does not store energy in batteries, but sends the power from the solar panels directly to the house electrical panel. It requires that the Utility power be functioning (not in brownout or blackout) for the solar power to continue sending power to the house. It has the advantage of being the lowest cost per watt, but it does not clean up the power quality of the utility nor does it provide backup power.
Does a Solar Grid Tie System provide backup power in the event of a Utility failure?
No it does not. A solar system must have batteries to provide backup power.
Does a Solar Grid Tie System improve the "dirty grid" power quality?
No it does not. A solar system must have batteries to provide continuous "clean power quality" from the solar inverters. Only a battery based inverter system can protect a home or businesses appliances, networks and electronics.
What are the advantages of Battery Based systems?
Battery Based system allow you store and utilize all the energy produced by the solar system. They provide a U.S Standard of power to loads and appliances at all times. These systems can be grid interconnected without sending power to the grid. They can offset 100% of the energy used by the home.
Can both systems be installed on the same home or business?
Yes, sometimes it is most beneficial to have a battery based system for critical, sensitive loads and have a grid tie system for large, but less sensitive appliances such as water heaters, old air conditioners, pool heaters, etc.
